What that feels like, what it is like. Her shoulders relaxed downward, her hands unfurled. I watched her chest begin to rise and fall mimicking a running rhythm. Any tension in her body began to visibly disappear. Behind closed lids, her focus was a vision of favourite sunlit forested trails. More than mesmerized, I was in absolute awe.\u00a0She was completely transported, and transformed before my eyes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in those moments, she was completely and utterly <strong>free<\/strong> from the wheelchair that bound her.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_9238.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6423\" width=\"344\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_9238.jpeg 960w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_9238-300x225.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_9238-768x576.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_9238-400x300.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mom taught me we are not defined by circumstance but by attitude. That freedom and choice are available when it may seem anything but.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6650.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6424\" width=\"299\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6650.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6650-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was a nurse. Witnessing her save a life when I was a toddler is a memory that remains clear. Too young to be afraid, I watched her calm and cradle a fallen injured stranger. She spoke with a gentle authoritative tone I had not heard before, as she knelt on a department store floor in her pretty blue dress. I remember the feel of the fabric of that dress, grasped in my little fist as I toddled along beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC06154.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6425\" width=\"299\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC06154.jpg 613w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC06154-300x235.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC06154-383x300.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her quick reaction and command of the situation was instilled in me, assisting the fallen woman, advising strangers nearby what to do. Perhaps that\u2019s when I began to see her as figure bigger than life, a superhero.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6710.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6426\" width=\"409\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6710.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6710-300x241.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_6710-374x300.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mom was a lover of family, nature, the arts, a vibrant life force. She was a champion of health, and those less fortunate.
