And.. its versatile in rules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00a0How like an artist to say that.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3219-2-1024x757.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6211\" width=\"337\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3219-2-1024x757.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3219-2-300x222.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3219-2-768x567.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3219-2-406x300.jpg 406w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_3219-2.jpg 1348w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thou it\u2019s great to do often, ( if\u00a0 you\u2019re really keen)\u00a0I find it most fruitful in the midst of a painting project with an abundance of the <strong>5 P\u2019s.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>Preparation ( information gathering etc) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2<\/strong>. Planning ( composition, etc)\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3<\/strong>. Problem solving <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Pressure ( self induced or other)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5<\/strong>. Physical labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a commission or painting collection due in specific time frame for exhibition. It doesn\u2019t have to be a large canvas, but most times it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DSC03223-1024x775.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6205\" width=\"414\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DSC03223-1024x775.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DSC03223-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DSC03223-768x581.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DSC03223-397x300.jpg 397w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/DSC03223.jpg 1269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Race the Light is <strong>not<\/strong> pre-planned. To get the most of the exercise it should be completely spontaneous. The thrill and challenge is arriving at appropriate the time of day and deciding to leap in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like canoeing into the middle of the lake and deciding to go for a swim without having brought a bathing suit, extra clothes,\u00a0or a towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1152-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6028\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1152-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1152-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1152-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_1152-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Either you dive in, or possibly miss a spectacular swim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rules are straightforward.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Preferably with 20-30 mins left of daylight , step away from the large project at hand. Turn it to the wall.\u00a0 <strong>Note<\/strong>: as you improve,\u00a0 try this exercise in 10 minutes. <\/li><li>Move all possible objects from the floor you may trip over in your artistic flurry.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>Now BEGIN:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A new smaller canvas from scratch<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Brand new subject matter ( different from large project)\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>No squeezing out new paint, or breaking out new brushes, or even clean ones _ limited to what is on existing palette and sticky brushes that are in play with the big project.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>~( old Masters did this with their palettes. Paint is expensive, Many artists today do an \u2018end of paint session\u2019 to use up the paint on their palette, if they aren\u2019t saving it for next day.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>No fixing mistakes, re-working areas, or changing composition once in play.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Finish, or nearly finish the painting before daylight fades.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>~( nearly finishing is just as good, as you now have your \u2018 leave something undone\u2019 at the end of day. Robert Genn was a fan of this.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4130-1024x829.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6208\" width=\"366\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4130-1024x829.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4130-300x243.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4130-768x622.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4130-370x300.jpg 370w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_4130.jpg 1761w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The benefits of Racing the Light are HUGE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Thou super challenging, it can be playful at the end of a taxing paint day.<\/li><li>It improves instinctive creative skill.<\/li><li>May relieve neck\/ shoulder\/ leg kinks, by working on a smaller surface area. Because of the complexity of the big project, you may need to loosen up, and you are now doing so because you are working crazy fast to beat the light.\u00a0<\/li><li>You aren\u2019t just shaking off physical kinks, but psychological\/ emotional ones too.
