Perfect for an athletic person comfortable being alone in the wilderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNote the distinct difference of pine and spruce. Now draw them,\u201d Dad instructed as we wandered northern boreal forest.&nbsp;Happy to be with my Dad in the park, surrounded by the scent of pine, I dutifully turned to my paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t remember the detailed lessons of pine &amp; spruce he taught that day when I was a child. But I do recall the spread of his wide shoulders under his kaki shirt swooping down to scoop a pine cone in his calloused hand. I remember the timber of his gentle voice and the easy manner of which he walked. I remember that moment so clearly, my love for him shining in my heart as it does today. Sharing shyness and a love of wilderness, we walked to the sound of chickadees in the bright summer sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Stand-14x18-oil-825.00-1024x817.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5959\" width=\"307\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Stand-14x18-oil-825.00-1024x817.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Stand-14x18-oil-825.00-300x239.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Stand-14x18-oil-825.00-768x613.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Stand-14x18-oil-825.00-376x300.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He is a man of few words, who stands by them. Never to offend, always in respect and kindness. A leader by example. Not once have I heard him raise his voice. Never. Not in anger, fear, or celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He fought forest fires and injustice, broken trail and found lost hunters. He tracked, tended wounded wildlife, and worked undercover to catch poachers. He spent recreational time playing music, sharing it with others. At 86, he still does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC04440-1024x794.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5960\" width=\"378\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC04440-1024x794.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC04440-300x233.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC04440-768x595.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSC04440-387x300.jpg 387w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He can still hear the soft call of a crane over forest &amp; village chatter, and is attentive of wildlife migrations. Mom would say, \u201cyou can take the guy out the park, but never the park out of the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/darin-dad-951x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5961\" width=\"343\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/darin-dad-951x1024.jpg 951w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/darin-dad-279x300.jpg 279w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/darin-dad-768x827.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dad\u2019s sensible teachings translate to the work I do, and how I live my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was 14, Dad proposed a one-time weekend job cleaning the forest fire crew\u2019s quarters. ( paid from his pocket.) Approaching the empty bunkhouse, he said. \u201cRemember, for the summer, this is their home. Do not judge how they live, or them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My duties, he explained, were to clean, mop and scrub every room, surface, floor, fixture, appliance, including the communal bathroom.&nbsp; It took two full days and need to develop a strong constitution for offensive odours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearing the end of my task, while transforming bathroom \u2018appliances\u2019 to their original colour, Dad arrived to check on my progress. Leaning on the doorframe he gently inquired.&nbsp;\u201cDid you clean underneath the urinals, wall behind, plumbing hardware ?\u201d I looked at him in slight horror.&nbsp; \u201cDad, these guys won\u2019t know if I cleaned under the bowl.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou are absolutely right\u2026. but you will.\u201d&nbsp;He continued, \u201cNever forget your name goes to every job and everything you do in life. <em>Your <\/em>name. Your accountability. It doesn\u2019t matter if they notice any of it. You know and that\u2019s what counts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As teenagers, Dad didn\u2019t want us to apply for summer park jobs. \u201cIt won\u2019t matter if it\u2019s a fair hire, getting the job on your own. You will be treated differently, by staff and fellow workers. You will be seen as the kids who might have had an easy \u2018in.\u2019 You don\u2019t want to be those kids, and I don\u2019t want you to be either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, in preparation for a wilderness journey, I sought his advice.Thou I grew up in nature, I hadn\u2019t tackled anything quite like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/a-month-in-the-wilderness\/\">expedition<\/a> I was about to embark on.&nbsp; Traveling fully self supported in remote wilderness with 5 strangers&nbsp;was a little daunting. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered if he would suggest what to pack, portaging or paddling skills, safety tips; yet, it wasn\u2019t surprising his advice involved none of the above.\u201cDo you trust your guides and have faith in your abilities? if you don\u2019t, you shouldn\u2019t be going.\u201dHe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think about it, if you don\u2019t apply due diligence or believe in your skills, it doesn\u2019t matter what you pack. They attended nearly every exhibit and bought my work at full price thru the gallery. When I said I would have given them the painting, they were equally horrified. \u201cThis is what you do.\u201d said Dad. \u201cIf you sold cars for a living would you give them away? It\u2019s your work, and we are pleased to collect it. \u201d Mom added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was an honour to have Dad attend my recent exhibit in Saskatchewan. When a massive snowstorm arrived opening day, I said \u201cDon\u2019t worry, even if no one shows up, we will still celebrate.\u201d Dad replied with a smile, \u201cYes. You have already done your job. You dreamt of showing here and you\u2019re here, now, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the easy- to- hug, ever kind, steadfast man who gave us a life surrounded by nature and support, my Dad, Happy Father\u2019s Day.
