( alone, without aid of ropes or equipment.)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The documentary also offers a rare glimpse &amp; perspective of the film crew.\u00a0All athletes &amp; climbers themselves face physical, creative and morale challenges in the midst of their creative efforts to capture Alex\u2019s climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One might assume those attempting death defying acts like Alex are without natural fear, perhaps driven by some inexplainable force.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Free Solo - Trailer | National Geographic\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/urRVZ4SW7WU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, Alex is not without fear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He thought about the climb for 8 years, saying it was \u2018just too scary\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within intense training, he would choreograph each move up the 3,200 foot granite face. Every\u2026 single\u2026 body\u2026 movement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Free Solo - Clip 1\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gRoDav8u0og?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex would train for 2 years, climb El Capitan 50 times with ropes, using what looked to be a large toothbrush to find indentations in the rock face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His handwritten journals overflowed defining every single move, where each thumb would be placed,\u2026 thru the entire climb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He rappelled down the face days before climbing after a rain, making certain there were not wet spots where he might slip and making certain his chalk marks were still present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extra challenging route portions were climbed over and over again. Falling with the ropes, he would immediately review on site what went wrong, change a movement, practice practice practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparations to this degree aren\u2019t accomplished by someone with a death wish.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is mastery.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hermanns-El-Capitan-Sentinal--1024x777.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5853\" width=\"437\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hermanns-El-Capitan-Sentinal--1024x777.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hermanns-El-Capitan-Sentinal--300x228.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hermanns-El-Capitan-Sentinal--768x583.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Hermanns-El-Capitan-Sentinal--395x300.jpg 395w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roddwagner\/2019\/03\/01\/the-seven-lessons-from-free-solo-on-working-without-a-rope\/#7a1fa02c1c0a\">Honnold free soloed Yosemite\u2019s Half Dome in September 2008 with nothing like the preparations he made for El Capitan. <\/a>\u201cI didn\u2019t really know how to prepare for a potential free solo, so I decided to skip the preparations and just go up there and have an adventure. I figured I would rise to the occasion, which, unsurprisingly, was not the best strategy.\u201d Honnold said in an April 2018 Ted Talk.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a giant, slightly &#8211; less- than- vertical slab near the summit, he came close to falling. Although he completed the climb, it was not the experience he wanted. \u201c I was disappointed in my performance because I had gotten away with something,\u201d he said. \u201c I didn\u2019t want to be a lucky climber. I wanted to great climber.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climb of El Capitan took him 3 hours and 56 min.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>~<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While researching this post, I discovered European American artist Hermann Ottomar Herzog\u00a0 traveled to &amp; painted El Captian in 1873. His beautiful golden renditions of the area are still in circulation today, found on pillows, wall art, prints, beachtowels &amp; free wallpaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the first time I have tackled my own rendition of a Master\u2019s work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make certain it wasn\u2019t about \u2018copying\u2019, I didn\u2019t allow myself to wear glasses, his image a\u00a0 fuzzy mass of shapes on my laptop. My own canvas became a blurry application of colour &amp; texture. Out of  my comfort zone, it was equal parts scary &amp; freeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose a horizontal closer cropped composition, using large brushes and mostly guess work with colour. ( no glasses restricts me from seeing colour detail) Working quickly I gave myself a time limit, so the work would have a plein air feel.
