You have seen this island in a few paintings, and that lovely curve of rock.<\/p>\n<p>What inspired me to paint its entirety, scruffy character &amp; all, isn\u2019t a sudden desire to study self portraiture.<br \/>\nI was filing photos when my Painters Keys subscription popped up Oct. 12th.<br \/>\nSara Genn\u2019s moving letter \u201cNinth Street Women\u201d motivated me to completely switch gears that day.<br \/>\n( click <a href=\"http:\/\/painterskeys.com\/ninth-street-women\/\">here<\/a> to read the full letter)<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026.\u201cElaine de Kooning had debuted with 71 other artists at the Ninth Street Gallery in New York. The show featured eleven women and sixty-one men, including Elaine\u2019s husband, Willem de Kooning, plus Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Motherwell and Jackson Pollock, the husband of another exhibitor, Lee Krasner. The month-long show launched a new wave of up-until-then virtual unknowns \u2014 loft squatters soon to become the Modern Masters of American Abstract Expressionism. Well, the men were soon recognized, at least. The women lumped along on a circuitous path as the at-times painter-wives of stratospheric art stars, with another ten, twenty, forty or sixty-plus years to go before establishing their own places in art history.\u201d..<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Today, \u201cIn terms of representation in commercial galleries, women hover around the 30% mark, with women continuing to make up only 3-5% of museum permanent collections in the U.S and Europe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>TEN to SIXTY YEARS<\/strong>\u2026 3-5% representation.<\/p>\n<p>Tears quietly blurred my eyesight &amp; I knew what to paint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/selfie\/dsc03510\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5629\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC03510-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC03510-300x216.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC03510-768x554.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC03510-1024x738.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/DSC03510-416x300.jpg 416w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis composition purposely breaks a few rules:<\/p>\n<p>1. When including a person in the landscape it\u2019s best to have the figure facing away, so the viewer can picture themselves in the painting. Figure facing the viewer may be thought of as confrontational.<\/p>\n<p>2. Thou sunglasses may be glam in fashion photos. In a painting, they block insight into the figure. Sunglasses off, you invite the viewer in, sunglasses on.. not so much.<\/p>\n<p>3. I painted the island in the middle. A compositional no-no.<\/p>\n<p>~<br \/>\nWhat I <strong>love<\/strong> about it:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s powerful.<br \/>\nThe character element makes no apologies, quietly demands attention.<br \/>\n\u201cI am here to stay\u201d she says wordlessly.<br \/>\nClose connection of the canoe &amp; figure may be viewed as an expression \u201cPaddle your own craft, forge your own path.\u201d ( cue fist pump)<\/p>\n<p>It felt cathartic &amp; was painted in joy.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dedicated to the women who stayed the course, and continue to in the world of art.<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nTo name a few Canadians, Mary Pratt (who was told there could only be one artist in the family, her husband.) Kathleen Morris, Anne Savage &amp; those of the Beaver Hall Group, Daphne Odjig, Emily Carr, Maude Lewis, Dorothy Knowles, my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juliahargeaves.com\">Julia Hargreaves<\/a> who captured this moment so well, &amp; Mom, creative brave heart &amp; art champion, ( first photo)<br \/>\n~<br \/>\nI\u2019 ve been thinking about canoe names, what are your suggestions? Bertha &amp; Agnes?<\/p>\n<p>P.S ~ Sara\u2019s Dad Robert wrote about pay inequality of women artists in comparison to men. It\u2019s still an issue, with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/advocate\/get-facts\">women earning 81cents to every one dollar made by men. Women working across art professions earn 20,000 less than men<\/a>.<br \/>\nIn 2017 the University of Luxumberg (thru over a million records) found <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/417356\/art-by-women-gender-study-sexism\/\">works by women sell for 47.6% less than work by men.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The face you know best is your own.
