{"id":3178,"date":"2015-02-20T11:48:33","date_gmt":"2015-02-20T16:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/?p=3178"},"modified":"2018-02-23T11:54:05","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T16:54:05","slug":"making-of-the-rising-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/making-of-the-rising-sun\/","title":{"rendered":"Making of the Rising Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinkingapplied.com\/artistic_process_folder\/artistic_process.htm#.VOYS9EttdmA\">Lee Humphries<\/a> president of ThinkingApplied.com, Minneapolis, MN. describes artistic process eloquently:<br \/>\nHe writes<br \/>\n\u201c\u2026At its core, artistic process blends emotion with the disciplined pursuit of quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He describes process in four steps:<br \/>\nContemplation: Observation: Organization: Perseverance.<\/p>\n<p>Painting live in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/painting-live-in-the-cbc-studio-today\/\">CBC studio<\/a> in 2013 I included listeners by updating my progress on social media.<br \/>\nThe risk of showing artistic process wasn\u2019t without drawbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Emails flooded in.<\/p>\n<p>If I could paint that fast, it must be easy.<br \/>\n\u2018It\u2019s just natural talent\u2019, they wrote.<br \/>\nFrom my perspective, chalking it up to natural talent, quickly diminishes the amount of training\/ work involved.<br \/>\nViewers seeing the work evolve, like the painting at CBC, is like seeing the last 1000 metres of a marathon.<\/p>\n<p>In painting, you develop skill with tons of practice, arriving to a point where mixing colours &amp; the physical part of painting becomes an organic process- which allows the creativity sparks to take over.<\/p>\n<p>It frees up space for the work to enfold.<\/p>\n<p>Thou it may seem so, it\u2019s never \u2018easy\u2019.<br \/>\nEach painting presents new challenges because every single painting is new. ( thank you J!) Thou we paint in very different styles, I also asked Julia for feedback during the process, it was important she felt what I was trying to portray.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/sun-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3159\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/sun-photo-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"sun photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/sun-photo-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/sun-photo-1024x676.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/sun-photo-454x300.jpg 454w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/sun-photo.jpg 1703w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/beholding-the-sun\/\">shoreline<\/a> you see behind me in the previous post is the shoreline in the painting.<br \/>\nI tested the waters by doing two paintings of the same shoreline, different perspective and sizes in the last three years.<br \/>\nSee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/boreal-expedition-studio-\">Boreal Sunrise<\/a> 22&#215;28 and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/boreal-expedition-studio-work\/nggallery\/page\/1\">Sun<\/a> 11&#215;14<\/p>\n<p>Rising Sun was a difficult composition to tackle, for one thing the sheer size of canvas, 5 feet x 3 feet- and the fact I wasn\u2019t going to include a dominant foreground. I wanted light to be the focus, the feel of how that morning was, all misty milky warmth.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t do any prior sketches. At the first wash of sienna- I knew I had the feel of it, now to not mess it up.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC00272-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3183\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC00272-2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC00272 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC00272-2-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC00272-2-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC00272-2-451x300.jpg 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used cold wax &amp; Oil, including nearly two 200ml tubes of the Cad Yellows.<br \/>\nI always mix colours by feel, no measurements, no colour charts, etc.<br \/>\nPalette is below. You can see those extra cad yellow tubes on the lined up above. I like to be organized.<\/p>\n<p>Layering began slowly.
