The best wisdom expressed early in my art career was from a Gallery<\/a> owner
\nwho delivers great advice and warm bear hugs.
\nA seasoned outdoorsman<\/a>,his meaty potter\u2019s hands craft beauty and grip canoe paddles thru northern rapids.
\nDuring my opening event in his gallery, one guest was creating his own turbulence.<\/p>\n

After months of work, opening reception may produce jumbled nerves and thin skin.
\nAfter his third attempt to “Get a rise out of the Artist”
\nspouting hurtful accusations,patrons were beginning to stare.
\nArt criticism comes with the territory, personal bullying, not so much.
\nI debated how to tactfully respond.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a unique career position as a working Artist.
\nChoosing the creative path embodies one of wonder,
\nof an education that will never cease.
\nIt spreads before us possibilities, challenging to create something new to the world, every time we step to the canvas.
\nCommanding us to evolve, to be better. To be great.
\nBuilt with love, fed by passion, fueled with a desire to inspire, to celebrate, to transform someone\u2019s world.

It\u2019s also a path that exposes our vulnerabilities.
\nIt beckons us to open a personal window to the world, despite possible criticism, the risk of failure.
\nEach painting we release, we wait\u2026 and hope for a warm reception.<\/p>\n

Choosing a path where our living is dependent on that reception is a powerful and frightening thing.
\nAs frightening as it is, it\u2019s also humbling.
\nTo intentionally wake up each morning
\nevaluate, assess, then choose,
\nToday, I am an Artist.<\/p>\n

The advice Al Pace gave to me over a decade ago?
\n\u201cDon\u2019t respond. However tactful you are,
\nyou will seem as the Artist with a chip on your shoulder.
\nDon\u2019t be that Artist. Be The Artist\u201d.<\/p>\n

I thanked the guest for coming before focusing my attention on other patrons.
\nThe show was a success.
\nMy memory is fuzzy on the guest\u2019s slashing words, but every one of Al\u2019s still resonates.
