{"id":2668,"date":"2014-08-22T17:13:40","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T21:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/?p=2668"},"modified":"2014-08-22T17:13:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T21:13:40","slug":"the-art-of-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/the-art-of-story\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my fondest memories living in the north is of the Yukon <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yukon_International_Storytelling_Festival\">Storytelling festival.<\/a><br \/>\nWhen a friend suggested attending, I had visions of Uncle Henry delivering a rambling \u2018 big fish\u2019 tale onstage.<br \/>\nA karaoke for talkers.<br \/>\nI couldn\u2019t have been more inaccurate.  <\/p>\n<p>The seeds for the festival sprouted in the 1980\u2019s when one of the Yukon\u2019s last Tagish speakers shared her stories to a global audience in Toronto.<br \/>\nThe Yukon Storytelling festival began in 1988, growing to include storytellers from all over the world, with an emphasis on First Nation and circumpolar countries.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mountain-Mist-oil.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mountain-Mist-oil-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Mountain Mist oil\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2678\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mountain-Mist-oil-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mountain-Mist-oil-1024x776.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Mountain-Mist-oil-395x300.jpg 395w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Mountain Mist- Oil on Canvas <\/p>\n<p>The festival hosts professional \u2018tellers\u2019, who are as diverse as the crowd. Stories range in mythical or true events, often moving, educational, or funny.<br \/>\nVisualize sort of an outdoor inspirational <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\">Ted Talk<\/a>, without the big screen and cushy seats.<\/p>\n<p>Perched on a grassy knoll under a canvas tent that balmy summer evening, captivated, we witnessed inspiring flawlessly performed stories.<br \/>\nThe event had a wonderful ancient primitive pull to how we shared stories in the past, gathered in tents or caves, around campfires, or in Grandma\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Stories weave us together in history. A powerful educational tool, stories are an evolving tapestry of society and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Art began before the written word, as a form of communication, sharing stories, myths &#038; legends.<br \/>\nPainting in it\u2019s own right is still an amazing conduit of connection, a story without words, inviting the viewer to participate.<br \/>\nMK, a young author wrote recently \u201cI like to look in your paintings and see if I can find my stories there, with my characters just out of sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Technology has changed the way we tell stories.<br \/>\nGrandma\u2019s kitchen table may be void of interactive family discussions, hosting individuals on their personal electronic devices.<br \/>\nWhat stories are we sharing? Are we engaged?<br \/>\nA friend said\u2019 I filled my mind with junk\u2019, after she realized she had spent an entire afternoon on you tube and FB.<br \/>\nExclaiming, &#8220;I suddenly questioned, what did I learn? I had filled my mind with irrelevant clutter\u201d.  <\/p>\n<p>While on an expedition of the boreal, renown explorers and photojournalists the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garyandjoaniemcguffin.com \">McGuffin\u2019s<\/a> shared fascinating stories at camp.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joanie-and-dawn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joanie-and-dawn-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"joanie and dawn\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2669\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joanie-and-dawn-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joanie-and-dawn-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dawnbanning.com\/newsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/joanie-and-dawn-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Dawn and Joanie- boreal 2011- photograph <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juliahargreaves.com\">Julia Hargreaves<\/a><br \/>\nJoanie\u2019s vivid writing with Gary\u2019s incredible photography capture the wilderness essence. They have published 7 books on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowepro.com\/photography-showcase\/joanie-and-gary-mcguffin\">explorations<\/a>, many which included their daughter Sila.<br \/>\nThe quiet forest surrounding us, our small group would relax in the evening dusk and talk.<br \/>\nJoanie\u2019s animated colourful descriptions brought their wilderness adventures to life.
